It is outrageous that a sector such as ours, the wine industry, which has suffered and is suffering so much, should also have to face the threat posed by the new labeling regulations that Brussels wants to impose. “Wine is harmful, noxious and produces cancer” say some European political groups and they remain so wide! They are not talking about abuse or excess, no, they are talking about simple consumption. And no reasons are given based on reliable studies to support this statement: they simply say it and want to force all wineries to shout it to the four winds on the labels of our bottles. What was missing to support the consumption of wine!
But the Regulatory Councils and wineries associations, including ASEBOR, of whose Board I am a member, are willing to fight and defend wine as a healthy product (the basis of the Mediterranean diet) that crosses borders making Spain a brand and that fixes the population in rural areas like few others. That was the reason for the trip that a representation of Regulatory Councils from all over Spain made to Brussels a few days ago: the defense of a sector that in Spain alone generates 24,000 million euros a year and employs more than 427,000 people.
Now it is time to be aware of this danger and do everything in our power to publicize this issue: for my part here I leave my little grain of sand.
IN THE MEANTIME LET’S DRINK WINE AND ENJOY THIS DESERVED SUMMER!
