Located just 12 kilometres from Aranda de Duero and 68 from Burgos, Gumiel de Izán is a small town in Burgos that hides great treasures.
In the heart of the village is the Church of Santa María, a jewel of Burgos Gothic and Baroque architecture, recognised as a Historic-Artistic Monument. Its façade, sculpted in the 17th century, shares striking similarities with the Treasury of Petra in Jordan, in silhouette, texture, colour and beauty.
An article in ‘National Geographic‘ magazine highlighted this resemblance, which has led to the parish priest, who used to give mass to less than 600 inhabitants, now finding the church full of visitors. https://viajes.nationalgeographic.com.es/a/fabulosa-petra-espanola-que-esconde-pequeno-pueblo-burgos_19721.
The spectacular late Gothic altarpiece, carved in walnut wood, depicts the Assumption of the Virgin and scenes from the life of Jesus, making this church a perfect starting point to explore the town’s cultural richness and sip one of our wines.
